Laser tattoo removal is a growing market. In fact, experts expect spending on laser tattoo removal treatments to exceed $83 million by 2018. While there are many factors that lead to tattoo regret, one thing is clear… the regret is strong and many Americans are looking for a reliable way to erase their ink.
Tattoos are created by injecting colored pigment into small deep holes made in the skin. Regardless of whether a tattoo artist or an untrained individual injects the pigment, the marks or designs are relatively permanent. When people subsequently want their tattoos removed, most physicians today consider laser tattoo removal one of the best methods.
For years, the Q-switched Nd:YAG has been the most frequently used laser for tattoo removal. With the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser available on the Harmony XL laser system, we can effectively treat dark tattoo inks, specifically black (which accounts for more than half of all tattoos) and dark blue. The 532nm KTP laser is often used to treat red, yellow and orange pigments.
You may think you want your tattoo forever but it’s good to know you have an alternative with laser tattoo removal. At VANITY ZONE, we use the Harmony XL laser system by Alma lasers to safely and effectively minimize or eliminate tattoo inks in the skin. The Harmony XL targets and heats the tattoo pigment without affecting the skin until the pigment is broken down into particles that are small enough to be naturally processed out of the body. Certain ink colors, such as red, blue, and green, can be more difficult to remove, but the Harmony XL can produce dramatic results after multiple treatment sessions.
WHAT TO EXPECT
First, the tattoo and skin are cleaned. The laser hand piece glides over the surface of the tattoo emitting pulses of light. The size and color of the tattoo determine the length of treatment time and total number of treatments. A tattoo the size of a quarter would take approximately 3-5 minutes to treat. Some patients request a topical anesthetic cream to minimize the stinging effect of the laser. Many patients tolerate treatment without topical anesthetic, and report the treatment as feeling similar to rubber band snaps. An ointment is applied following treatment to keep the area moist, and then it is covered with a protective dressing.
ANY SIDE EFFECTS
Some patients experience redness, swelling, tenderness, crusting, sunburn sensation, or itching immediately following treatment. Our doctor will confirm the treatment plan, and discuss what to expect from each session.
WHY SO MANY SESSIONS?
Size, color, location and the age of the tattoo determine the number of treatments necessary to effectively remove the tattoo. During the consultation, the treatment regimen will be reviewed and any questions regarding the number of estimated sessions will be provided at that time.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
After each treatment session patients will see the tattoo gradually lighten. Due to the various ink types used in tattooing, the results and the number of treatments may vary. Multiple treatments are most often required (anywhere from 2 to 10) and are scheduled 4 to 7 weeks apart. The results and appearance of the tattoo through the removal process vary from patient to patient.
Laser tattoo removal is the safest and quickest option to remove unwanted tattoos, however there are other treatment options for tattoos that do not respond to the laser. Patients may need surgical excision, chemical peels or traditional dermabrasion. These treatment options are invasive treatment methods that often result in scarring, and are typically only used in worst-case scenarios.
